Managing Future Anxiety Through Valued Direction

31-05-2024

Anxiety about the future is a common feeling that many people experience, especially during times of uncertainty and change. It's natural to worry about what lies ahead, but when this anxiety becomes overwhelming, it can prevent us from living a full and meaningful life. One method that can be very helpful in managing such anxiety is using the concept of valued direction, which involves focusing on personal values and using them as a compass to navigate life's challenges.

What is Valued Direction?

Valued direction is a term often used in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy. It involves identifying and living in accordance with your deepest values, the things that truly matter to you. Values can be seen as constant guides that provide direction and meaning in life, unlike goals, which are more specific and can be achieved or not achieved.

By having a clear picture of your values, you can create a sense of purpose and direction that helps navigate uncertainty and anxiety.

Steps to Use Valued Direction to Manage Anxiety

1. Identify Your Values

The first step is to clearly define what is most important to you. This can include relationships, health, career, personal growth, creativity, or anything else. A good way to start is by asking yourself what you would like people to say about you when you're not present, or what you would like to have accomplished at the end of your life.

2. Examine Your Current Life

Reflect on how your current life aligns with your values. Are your daily actions and decisions in line with what you value most? If not, identify the areas where there is a discrepancy..

3. Set Values-Based Goals

Break down your values into concrete, actionable goals. If one of your values is health, a values-based goal might be to exercise regularly or eat healthily. These goals should be flexible and adaptable, so you can adjust them as circumstances change.

4. Set Values-Based Goals

Start taking small steps every day that align with your values. This could be as simple as spending time with loved ones, engaging in a hobby, or taking a moment to reflect and meditate. By acting in accordance with your values, even when anxiety about the future arises, you can create a sense of control and purpose.
